Highlights of 2022: Lionesses win Euro 2022
We are going to explore some of the highlights of 2022.
First up is a look at how football came home. It wasn't delivered by Harry Kane and Phil Foden, but by Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone.
Chloe Kelly’s winning goal in extra time against Germany at Wembley crowned a first senior title for an England national team since 1966.
The goals in the final were scored by Kelly and Ella Toone, each introduced from the bench. The game management from the players and management took the match away from an experienced Germany team overwhelmed by the Lionesses’ depth of talent.
Kelly’s goal, scrambled in after a corner, was the achievement of a dream and will have inspired many others to play the game of football.
A look at the match report from European Super Football
Substitute Chloe Kelly got what proved to be the winner after she poked home a loose ball from a corner to send the record crowd of 87,192 wild with ten minutes of extra time remaining. There was a short wait before a VAR check confirmed the goal.
Sarina Wiegman's side showed they were equal to anything a physical German team threw at them. Earlier on the day, Toone had come off the bench to score the opener in normal time before Germany's Lina Magull set up a nervous ending when she equalised.
There were scenes of jubilation in the stands. There was also an outpouring of emotion by players on the pitch at full-time as the magnitude of their achievement sank in. What a night. It was the night that football came home.
